  • Associate’s Degree and certification or equivalent experience.
  • Ability to establish priorities and meet deadlines. Excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • Ability to interact professionally and courteously with individuals at all levels.
  • Proficiency in using various software systems such as Microsoft Word, PowerPoint, Microsoft Office, and Access.
  • Ability to work independently and exercise good judgement while maintain client confidentiality, integrity, and discretion in the performance of all duties.
  • Experience with family law preferred.
  • Bilingual (Spanish) Oral and Written preferred.
Position Objective Primary Functions
  • Provide paraprofessional legal services to eligible clients in civil, family, and other cases in accordance with the program’s mission and program’s mission and principles of advocacy, other program guidelines, and under the direct supervision of an attorney, according to the Rules of Professional Conduct.
  • Participate in outreach and community legal education to clients and community groups, as assigned by a supervisor, so as to provide clients or others with information and assistance in program priority areas and to build a strong positive working relationship with the program.
  • Assist attorney or other advocate in representing clients or working with community groups.
  • Conduct interviews and intakes with clients
  • Investigating and developing cases and projects assigned, including conducting necessary interviews.
  • Making and following up referrals of clients to appropriate alternative or additional sources of assistance.
  • Drafting letters, memos, and other written materials relating to assigned cases or projects.
  • Maintaining accurate, complete, well-organized records and files regarding cases and projects assigned
  • Developing specialized skills and knowledge in assigned areas and remain current on new developments in that area.
  • Translating for clients who speak a difference language than their advocate (if applicable)
  • Obtaining and organizing documents and other information relating to client cases
  • Seeking and accepting supervision and guidance from supervising attorney on cases and projects assigned
  • Participating in outreach to clients and community groups as assigned by a supervisor, so as to provide clients or others with information and assistance in program priority areas and to build a strong working relationship between the program and the clients or group.
  • Reporting caseload statistics and other information regarding his/ her activities and advocacy to immediate supervisor.
  • Traveling to administrative agencies and elsewhere in connection with above responsibilities
  • Program administrative tasks assigned by a supervisor or manager.
  • Preserve and enhance the Agency’s image in the community through all interactions.
  • At every opportunity, inform community members of services available to victims of relationship violence and sexual assault through Friends of the Family.
  • Participate in DCFOF staff and education meetings as requested.

  Physical Requirements

  • Ability to lift 25 lbs.
  • Ability to easily climb stairs
  • Ability to sit or stand for long periods of time

This position is a grant-funded position and is subject termination based on the renewal of supporting grants. Employment with Denton County Friends of the Family is on an at-will basis, in accordance with state law, meaning that both the employee and the agency are free to terminate the relationship at any time, with or without cause or advance notice.
